Volute Spring manufacturing process

Material selection : This is the initial stage of Volute Spring manufacturing to start. It is done by selecting high-strength steel or alloy wire, known for its durability and elasticity, suitable for high-stress applications.

Flat section cutting : The material is cut to the required length based on the Spring’s dimensions and load specifications.

Hot coiling process : The wire is wound into a conical or spiral shape using a spring hot coiling machine. This forms the basic volute structure, ensuring that each coil fits neatly inside the next when compressed.

Heat treatment : The coiled spring is heated treated in a furnace to a specific temperature and then cooled. This process improves the spring’s hardness, durability, and elasticity, enhancing its load-bearing capacity.

Grinding and finishing : The ends of the Spring may be ground flat for better stability. It’s required for Grinding it’s surface to remove excess material or imperfections are removed to ensure smooth compression and expansion during operation.

Surface coating : The Spring undergoes surface coating treatments such as color coating, plating or painting to improve corrosion resistance and protect it from rust.

Quality inspection : The finished Volute Spring is tested for load capacity, dimensional accuracy, and performance. Each spring must meet stringent quality standards to ensure proper functionality.

Packaging : After passing inspection, the springs are packaged for distribution to various industries, ready for use in machinery and equipment.

Volute Spring uses

Volute Spring is used to absorb heavy shocks, handle high loads in compact spaces, and provide progressive resistance in railway buffers, heavy machinery, military vehicle suspensions, large industrial press tools, railway switches, heavy machinery, industrial presses and agricultural equipment. Their common applications are found in heavy machinery, automotive suspension systems and shock absorbers, also vertical and horizontal suspension systems for tanks and smaller tools.

Military Vehicles : Acting as robust suspension components (such as the horizontal volute suspension used on historic tanks like the M4 Sherman).

Volute Spring types

There are generally two types of Volute Spring suspension are used, find their details below :

Single or Vertical Volute Spring : It is called also as Vertical Volute Spring has a spiral or cone-like shape, with coils winding outward from a central point to form a single continuous helix. The coils are progressively more significant from the top to the base. The Vertical Volute Spring compresses when a load is applied, with each coil nesting inside the next, minimizing height. It absorbs and distributes the force efficiently, providing strong resistance as it returns to its original shape upon release.

Double Volute Spring : It is consists of two interlocking volute spirals, creating a more robust and more compact design than a single Volute Springs. The two spirals in Double Volute Spring compress together under load, offering increased strength and load-bearing capacity. The interlocking design allows for smoother compression and greater resistance to deformation, making it ideal for heavy-duty applications where space is limited but high force absorption is required.
